I have a tough time taking a real break from “work”. Even when on vacation I catch up on reading, and my mind churns with ideas for world domination.
Well, not literally, but in the way Hugh MacLeod has shared in his new book Evil Plans: Having Fun on the Road to World Domination.
Hugh shares some good stories about changing one’s life, going after what you’re passionate about, and going all in. If you’re not familiar with Hugh you can check him out over at www.gapingvoid.com where you’ll find his witty and sometimes irreverent comics and blog posts about marketing, creativity, personal branding, and business in general (among other things).
So what did I like about Evil Plans? It speaks to people on the cusp. A book like this may give that extra nudge to someone looking to take on a new challenge, a new project, or take that turn in a different direction. It’s aggressive, and Hugh makes a point to make it clear (whether it’s through his writing or the cartoons within) that it’s you as an individual that makes the choices for where you want to go.
What didn’t I like about Evil Plans? It speaks to people on the cusp. No, you’re not having deja vu or re-reading that due to your ADD. I think the shortcomings of this book are due to the niche it’s written for. It’s not Hugh’s fault. He’s a brilliant guy. Many business book authors find themselves in a similar situation. The book will absolutely not fail because of this, but I just think that’s where it (and others like it) fall short.
Sure, there’s a large audience for this book. I encourage anyone that is ready for a fresh start or to take their career to another level to give it a read. Let it inspire you! Thanks Hugh!
